Christmas Island gets new weather station

Christmas Island Weather Station. A new weather station has been opened at Cassidy International Airport on Kiribati’s Kiritimati Island.

The rebuilding of the meteorological station was identified by the European Union and the Kiribati government as a key to strengthen operational support after Cassidy’s recognition as an international airport.

The station houses five weather forecasters, working around the clock, to provide information for aircraft.

Their forecasts will also be made available to people in the outer islands, helping them determine whether it is safe to go to sea.

They will also work with the National Disaster Office in preparing for major weather events such as tropical depressions, storm surges and droughts.

Should result in much better weather forecasts and current conditions for our Christmas Island travel.
