Fish Christmas Island

A CASUAL ISLAND LODGE OVERLOOKING THE WORLD'S LARGEST ATOLL LAGOON.

Fly Fishing Christmas Island | You have probably heard through the grapevine about Bonefish Hawaii’s epic hosted trips, now is a great time to join us on an upcoming expedition. We have been visiting this this tiny central Pacific atoll since 1979 and know the best Lodges, Guides, Gear, Tides, and Seasons to book.

This tropical paradise of palm trees, white sandy beaches, sparkling clear warm water, turquoise lagoons, and coral reefs, teems with fish and marine life. An endless variety of flats dwellers, reef denizens, and offshore bruisers await your fly with little fishing pressure from other anglers. The diversity of Christmas Island Fishing is truly remarkable; you can wade hard white sand flats for Bonefish, Triggerfish, and numerous others, hunt shallow edges and cuts for Giant Trevally, drift offshore feeding lanes for rising Milkfish, or cast to boiling schools of Tuna or finning Sailfish just offshore.

Get in touch, and let us help you to get the most out of your Christmas Island Fishing adventure. We actually visit Christmas Island a lot (6 times last year) and know the scoop. We are always around to help with gear selection, flies, or to chat about techniques or fishing areas. When you book through Bonefish Hawaii there is never and additional fee for our travel consultation services, trip planning or pre-trip recommendations. For more information please check out our partners at Fish Christmas Island and remember, you always get the same price as booking direct!

CHRISTMAS ISLAND FLY FISHING

FLY FISHING CHRISTMAS ISLAND | ONE OF THE MOST REMOTE ISLANDS ON THE PLANET, This unique fishing destination lies some 1400 miles South of Hawaii, and just North of the equator. The fishing and weather are consistent throughout the year. Temperatures are generally in the 80’s and cool breezes blow across the flats daily. If you are looking to ditch winter, this is the place to do it.

Over 144 square miles of protected interior lagoon make Christmas Island the largest atoll in the world. There is no shortage of easy wading on white sand flats, or untouched ocean-side marl flats to explore. With its large colonies of sea birds, vast fringing reefs, lagoon cuts, and surrounding ocean, Christmas Island also offers excellent opportunities for observing fantastic bird and marine life. We have noted over a dozen species of sea birds, taken a swim with Manta Rays, and even snorkeled with huge Whale Sharks!

The island remains largely unspoiled with virtually no commercialism. A copra plantation and a number of other government operations including salt extraction and aquarium fish export provide employment for the local population, numbering about 8000. We find the local Kiribati (Christmas) people to be some of the most friendly and happy we have met anywhere in the world. Drive along the only road on the Island and all you see is bare-footed, smiling kids. Simple is better here.

GETTING THERE

FIJI AIRWAYS provides weekly jet charter service from Honolulu, Hawaii (HNL) to Cassidy International Airport (CXI) on Christmas Island. The 3 hour Boeing 737-700 flight departs/arrives every Tuesday at noon, so plan to be in Honolulu by the Monday prior to your Christmas Island departure. Your return flight from CXI typically arrives in HNL at approximately 11 AM, giving you lots of time to make your connection home. We recommend you schedule outbound flights from HNL sometime after 12:30PM to allow for delays, US Customs, etc.

HAWAIIAN BONEFISH

Don’t miss a great opportunity to fish for some of the largest bonefish in the world during your stop over in Honolulu. Bonefish Hawaii has become to go-to guide service for many hard-core bonefish addicts in search of Monster Bones. The average Hawaii bonefish scales over 6 pounds and double-digit fish are encountered almost daily. These highly educated bonefish can be ultra-challenging to hook and land. Fortunately, Bonefish Hawaii has the fishery pretty well figured out and will take care of all the details. Just plan to arrive in Hawaii a day or two early, bring a seven or 8 weight rod, some wading shoes, and a few good casts. We will do the rest. Advance reservations are always a good idea.

IKARI HOUSE

Over the years we have tried most of the hotel options on the Island with varying degrees of success. Ikari House (Bonefish House) is our first choice at Christmas Island for both great guides, and comfortable lodging. You may have heard horror stories about other lodges of no air conditioning, bugs, cold showers, or fish and rice for three meals a day, boat, truck, or guide snafus… Not at Ikari House.

Jacob Teem and his seasoned staff provide clean rooms, safe and well maintained boats, Terrific English-Speaking Guides, hot showers, icy air conditioning, and a REALLY COLD BEER at the end of a great fishing day. We have got you covered.
